Teuku Adifitrian,
but more widely known as TOMPI, was born and raised
in the town of Lhokseumawe, in ACEH. In 1997, he left Aceh and moved to Jakarta to pursue
his studies at the University of Indonesia to become
a Medical Doctor.
His hobby in performance arts has been apparent since childhood as
he was actively involved in traditional Aceh music and dance performances. In
the midst of his busy schedule, Tompi still tries to find time for his singing
hobby. Tompi continues to gain confidence in performing, especially after seeking
professional guidance from Bertha and Tjut Deviana. After a busy day learning about medicine and biology, he transforms into a soulful singer, singing in first
class clubs and lounges around Jakarta. These experiences have allowed Tompi
to evolve from the once shy and timid boy from a small town in Aceh into the Tompi
we see today.
Aside from singing and performing, Tompi found another musical talent that has
been hidden, that is song writing. He always carries a small recorder or his
cellphone to record tunes that pop up whenever he is "inspired".
In 2002, Tompi and his band became the house band for THE BAR at the Four Seasons
Hotel in Jakarta. At the same time, he was recruited as the vocalist in CHEROKEE.
With Cherokee, under the production of OPP (in association with Sony Music),
he was given the opportunity to perform in many cities in Indonesia and in Singapore.
In late 2004, again under the production of OPP (in association with Forte/Aquarius),
Tompi got his recording break as a vocalist in a multi-ethnic world music album
entitled Bali
Lounge. Through this, people started to notice this multi talented man with an
exceptional voice.
In July of 2005, OPP was proud to produce and release (in association with E-Motion)
Tompi's self-titled album debut, entitled Tompi or "T". All the songs
in this album are self-written, telling stories about experiences of Tompi and
the people around him. The album was made passionately and to some extent impulsively,
with one track in the album being written ten minutes before recording, while
he was waiting outside the studio. This album was supported by well known musicians
such as Lewis Pragasam and Marina Xavier.
Of the twelve tracks, six are in English and tell the story of love in many facets.
The hit single “Selalu Denganmu”, which features Gita Wirjawan on
the acoustic piano, climbed up to number one at all major radio stations in a
matter of weeks.
Tompi hopes that his music can bring a breath of fresh air into the Indonesian
music arena.
